Dental Crown Services at Richmond
We all desire healthy teeth that will last a lifetime, but sometimes, a covering for your teeth such as a crown might be necessary. A broken tooth is a typical instance of when a crown may be utilised to cover your tooth. Your tooth may be so severely decayed or broken that there is insufficient natural dental material to support a filling.
A crown can also be attached to a dental implant to replace a missing tooth or used to protect a fractured tooth. A severely stained tooth can potentially be covered with a crown.
Your tooth can become stronger, more aesthetically pleasing, and have better alignment or shape thanks to a crown. Most people won’t even notice that you have a crown since ceramic, porcelain, or resin crowns can be fashioned to match the colour of your teeth.

Ottawa’s Dental Crown Experts
The type of crown that would be appropriate for your specific needs will be discussed with you by our skilled dentists. Our dentists will typically take an imprint or cast of your teeth as the initial step to ensure the crown fits your tooth properly. Additionally, our dentist will match the crown’s color to your tooth.
Once your bespoke crown is finished and ready to be made, our dentist will gently fit it over your tooth with a special adhesive to hold it in place. Our dentist will give you a local pain reliever if you are concerned about any potential pain.
At Dentistry at Richmond, we’re confident your dental crown will look and function like your regular teeth. Our dentists are here for you if you have any questions about your crown. Contact us today.

Frequently Asked Questions
A dental crown is a hollow artificial tooth that is created to fit over your natural tooth after it has been cleaned up and prepared. The crown restores the shape, colour, and function of your tooth by covering and “caping” the entire tooth all the way down to the gum line.
A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:
- To protect a weak tooth from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth
- To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
- To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of tooth left
- To hold a dental bridge in place
- To cover misshapened or severely discolored teeth
- To cover a dental implant
After your crown has been positioned, there won’t be any “down time.” Since the procedure is non-invasive and doesn’t involve surgery, you can resume your normal activities right away without having to worry about missing work or rearranging your schedule.
When taken care of properly, porcelain crowns can last up to 20 years and typically last at least 15 years. You may anticipate your crown to last a very long time because the porcelain ceramic materials used to construct it are incredibly strong and hard, much like your enamel.
No. We may numb your mouth prior to placing your crown so that you won’t experience any pain as your tooth is prepared for the crown. For your full safety and comfort during your appointment at Richmond Family Dentistry, we also provide sedation dentistry.
Permanent crowns can be made from all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all ceramic.
Metal crowns
Metals used in crowns include gold alloy, other alloys (for example, palladium) or a base-metal alloy (for example, nickel or chromium). Metal crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well and probably last the longest in terms of wear down.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns
Dental crowns made of porcelain fused to metal can be colour matched to your neighbouring teeth. Crowns made of porcelain fused to metal resemble natural teeth the most, second only to all-ceramic crowns.
All-resin dental crowns
Dental crowns made entirely of resin cost less than other kinds of crowns. However, they are more prone to fractures and deterioration over time than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.
All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental
Dental crowns made entirely of ceramic or porcelain offer the best natural colour match of any crown type and may be more suited for those who are allergic to metal. Front teeth are a suitable candidate for all-ceramic crowns.
While permanent crowns are created at a dental laboratory, temporary crowns can be created in your dentist’s office. Until a permanent crown is built by the dental laboratory, temporary crowns, which can be composed of acrylic or stainless steel, can be used as a restorative option.
