Treatment Options for Tooth Decay

Addressing small cavities and minor tooth decay often involves the use of dental fillings. These fillings play a crucial role in rebuilding lost tooth structure, ensuring the tooth remains strong, and restoring the patient’s ability to bite and chew.

For more significant cases of tooth decay, where traditional fillings prove insufficient, inlays and onlays become a viable option. These procedures are designed to restore larger sections of damaged or decayed tooth structures.

In instances of major tooth decay that has substantially harmed a tooth, the recommended approach is the application of a dental crown. Dental crowns serve to cap and protect seriously damaged teeth, enabling patients to bite and chew normally.

In situations where tooth decay has led to infection, a root canal may be necessary to remove the infected dental pulp and save the tooth. However, in cases where a tooth is beyond repair due to extensive decay, tooth extraction becomes the preferred treatment option.

No. Tooth decay is the gradual process that damages a tooth, while a cavity is a permanently damaged area or hole that can develop as tooth decay progresses.

Decay usually begins when acids produced by bacteria in plaque repeatedly remove minerals from the tooth’s enamel. At this early stage, you may not have an actual cavity yet, and the mineral loss may sometimes be reversed with fluoride, good oral hygiene, and changes to your diet.

If the decay continues, however, the enamel can eventually break down and form a cavity. Once a physical cavity has developed, the lost tooth structure cannot grow back on its own and typically needs to be restored by a dentist.

Tooth decay occurs when acids produced by bacteria in dental plaque repeatedly attack and weaken the tooth’s enamel. These bacteria use sugars and starches from the foods and drinks you consume and produce acids as a by-product.

Your saliva and fluoride normally help replace some of the minerals lost during these acid attacks. Problems develop when the teeth are exposed to acid frequently enough that mineral loss happens faster than the tooth can repair itself. Over time, the enamel weakens and a cavity can form.

Factors that can increase your risk include frequent sugary or acidic foods and drinks, frequent snacking, inadequate brushing and flossing, dry mouth, and insufficient fluoride exposure. Certain areas, such as the grooves of back teeth and spaces between teeth, can also be more difficult to clean and therefore more susceptible to decay.

Tooth decay may cause sensitivity, toothache, pain when biting, visible discoloration, or a hole in the tooth, but early decay often causes no symptoms at all.

As decay progresses, you may notice sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks. A tooth may begin to hurt when you chew or develop persistent or spontaneous pain. White, brown, or dark spots may appear on the tooth, and more advanced decay may create a visible pit or hole.

If decay reaches the inner pulp of the tooth, pain can become more severe and infection may develop. Because a cavity can progress considerably before it starts hurting, regular dental examinations can help identify decay at an earlier and more manageable stage.

Stopping tooth decay from spreading depends on how advanced it is. Early enamel decay may sometimes be stopped or reversed, while a cavity that has already formed generally requires dental treatment.

When decay is limited to early mineral loss in the enamel, fluoride can help strengthen and remineralize the affected area. Improving brushing and flossing and reducing how frequently your teeth are exposed to sugary foods and drinks can also help prevent the decay from progressing.

Once the enamel has broken down and a cavity has formed, brushing alone cannot repair the missing tooth structure. A dentist may need to remove the decayed portion and restore the tooth with a filling or another restoration. Getting the tooth assessed early can prevent the decay from reaching deeper layers and requiring more extensive treatment.

Very early tooth decay can sometimes be reversed, but an established cavity cannot heal or fill itself in naturally. The difference depends on whether the tooth’s surface is still intact.

During the earliest stage of decay, minerals are being lost from the enamel but a physical hole has not yet formed. Saliva naturally supplies minerals to the teeth, while fluoride can strengthen enamel and encourage remineralization. Better oral hygiene and reducing frequent sugar exposure can help shift the balance back toward repair.

Once decay has destroyed enough enamel to create a cavity, that lost tooth structure does not regenerate. The cavity usually needs to be cleaned and restored to prevent it from becoming larger and reaching deeper parts of the tooth.

Cavity treatment depends on the depth of the decay and how much healthy tooth structure remains. Treatment can range from fluoride for very early decay to fillings, crowns, root canal treatment, or extraction for more advanced cases.

If decay is detected before a cavity develops, your dentist may recommend fluoride and preventive measures to help remineralize the enamel. Small to moderate cavities are commonly treated by removing the decayed tooth structure and restoring the area with a dental filling.

Larger cavities may require an inlay, onlay, or crown to restore and protect the remaining tooth. If bacteria and decay have reached the dental pulp, root canal treatment may be necessary to remove the infected tissue while preserving the tooth. Extraction is generally considered when a tooth is too extensively damaged to be predictably restored.

The earlier decay is diagnosed, the more likely treatment can remain conservative.

An untreated cavity usually continues to become larger and can eventually cause significant tooth damage, pain, or infection. Cavities do not normally disappear once the tooth structure has been permanently damaged.

Decay can begin in the outer enamel and then progress into the softer dentin underneath, where it may spread more quickly. At this stage, sensitivity or discomfort may become more noticeable. If bacteria eventually reach the pulp at the centre of the tooth, inflammation or infection can cause significant pain and may lead to an abscess.

As the cavity becomes larger, there is also less healthy tooth structure available to preserve. A cavity that could initially have required a filling may later need a crown or root canal treatment. If the tooth becomes severely damaged or cannot be restored, extraction may be necessary.

The most effective way to prevent cavities is to control plaque, use fluoride, reduce frequent sugar exposure, and maintain regular preventive dental care. Prevention is not only about how much sugar you consume, but also how often your teeth are exposed to it.

Brush thoroughly twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily with floss or another interdental cleaner. Fluoride helps strengthen enamel and makes it more resistant to acid attacks.

Try to limit frequent snacking and sipping on sugary or acidic beverages throughout the day. Each exposure can create another period of acid activity in the mouth. Drinking water, particularly after eating, can help, while adequate saliva production also plays an important role in protecting your teeth.

Regular dental examinations and professional cleanings provide another layer of prevention. Your dentist can identify areas where plaque is accumulating, detect early decay that may not yet be causing symptoms, and recommend preventive treatments based on your individual cavity risk.
