Oral Sedation for Fear & Anxiety of Dental Procedures

Oral sedation dentistry is a medical procedure involving the administration of oral sedative drugs, generally to facilitate a dental procedure and reduce patients fear and anxiety related to the experience. Oral sedation is one of the available methods of conscious sedation dentistry, along with inhalation (gas) and oral sedation (pill).

Dental patients with generalized anxiety, belonephobia (fear of needles and sharp instruments), prior dental trauma, or generalized fear of the dentist can take oral medication in order to reduce their anxieties. A variety of single and incremental dose protocols are used to medicate the patient as early as the day before treatment.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Sedation dentistry is typically very safe and efficient when performed by a trained specialist. Before settling on a sedative technique and dose, our dentists will thoroughly assess your needs and state of health. Your vital signs will be carefully watched throughout your treatment to ensure your safety.

Sedation dentistry can help you feel more at ease and calm during your consultation if your fear of the dentist is keeping you from receiving the dental health treatment you require. Delaying important dental work can lead to the progression of minor dental diseases into more difficult, inconvenient, and expensive concerns.  Our dentists have the experience and expertise to determine whether you are a good candidate for sedation and which form of sedation would be most appropriate for your dental needs, treatment concerns, and current health status.

Taking care of your oral health has never been more affordable and more attainable than it is at Dentistry at Richmond. Call our sedation dentists today to schedule a consultation appointment.

How Sedation Dentistry Works

Sedation dentistry is a relatively recent dental procedure. Patients who have anxiety before receiving treatment at the dentist can benefit from it. Sedation dentistry can be administered by a dentist or by a qualified anaesthesiologist. The delivery of this procedure can be done orally, intravenously, or inhaled. During the course of the dental visit, a sedative will be administered to the patient to make them feel calm.

Sedation dentistry has several benefits, including the ability to help patients feel less anxious about going to the dentist, assist those who have limited mobility, and be used on young kids who may require more extensive dental care. This type of treatment may be used for a variety of dental treatments, such as tooth extraction, root canal therapy and wisdom tooth removal. Frequently Asked Questions

You can benefit from sedation dentistry if you have anxiety or fear when visiting the dentist. Sedation dentistry can assist you in overcoming your anxiety if you are concerned about pain, have had a bad dental encounter in the past, or feel queasy around the sounds and smells of a dental office.

Some patients are also candidates for sedation dentistry due to physical factors like a weak gag reflex or extremely sensitive teeth. Ask your dentist if you are unsure if you qualify.

No. After some forms of sedation, you could feel a bit sleepy and “out of it,” but after a few hours, you’ll feel like yourself again. In these situations, you will require a ride home from your appointment.

Sedation can be used to perform nearly any procedure. Not the procedure itself, but the anxiety that comes along with it, is the reason for the sedation. Ask your dentist if sedation is an option for your procedure.

Most likely not, but you might feel as though you slept off during the entire event.

An IV can be used to administer general anaesthesia, which puts the patient to sleep when a patient has unique needs. However, this level of sedation is not required in the vast majority of circumstances.

Conscious sedation, whether administered orally or intravenously, can produce a very soothing and comfortable feeling that simulates sleep. Patients frequently remark that they feel as though they are in a dream.

You shouldn’t eat any solid or semi-solid food for six hours before to receiving dental treatment under sedation. You should not consume any drinks for two hours before to obtaining sedative medications.

Sedation is very safe. Your dentist and the rest of the staff have received thorough training in handling sedated patients. For years, doctors have safely recommended the drugs used in oral sedation as a sleep aid.

In addition to being extremely safe, IV sedatives are only given by dentists who have received the necessary training and certification. The entire time you are at our offices, you will be under the supervision of specialised safety equipment, and you won’t be let go until it is safe for you to return home.
